Description

Conflicts, population displacement, and drought are driving tens of thousands of Ethiopians, Eritreans, and Somalis out of the Horn of Africa. Most people escaping these conditions will not end up in refugee camps but will attempt to migrate abroad. Many of these undocumented labor migrants face exploitation, extortion, trafficking, detention, deportation, disease, and even drowning as they travel. However, the interrelated nature of migration with these regional conflicts, displacements, and disasters remains both understudied and under-addressed—especially in this region of the world. SIS professor Lauren Carruth will moderate a discussion amongst scholars and leading policy voices in migration and African studies. An audience Q&A and reception will follow the event.

This event is co-sponsored by SIS, the Mohammed Said Farsi Chair of Islamic Peace, American University’s Immigration Lab and the “Changing Aid” Research Initiative, and Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, including their African Studies Program, Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, and Institute for the Study of International Migration.

This event is made possible by a Title VI grant from the United States Department of Education, which is funding a National Resource Center on the Middle East and North Africa at Georgetown University.
