History Talk: Armesleigh Park

Local historian Carolyn Long chronicles the development of Armesleigh Park, a suburb within Tenleytown, consisting of 93 charming frame houses—colonials, bungalows, foursquares, and cottages–built by Harry Kite between 1919 and 1925. The presentation is illustrated with many photographs of these houses. There are also nineteenth-century maps showing that the land that became Armesleigh Park was once part of the Lyles-Magruder Estate. The c. 1800 family residence, The Rest, still stands at the corner of 39th Street and Windom Place.

Carolyn Long is an artist and historian. Most of her research and writing is focused on the Creole families and iconic characters of New Orleans, but she also works on the history of her own neighborhood, Armesleigh Park. Carolyn has been a member of the board of directors of the Tenleytown Historical Society since 2000 and chaired the committee that developed the Tenleytown Heritage Trail in 2010. She and her husband have lived on Alton Place since 1987.
