Description

This October, Brazil will hold presidential elections, and the leading candidates are former President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva and incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro. Although Brazilian democracy has a troubled history, it is the fourth largest democracy in the world and a bellwether for Latin America. Bolsonaro’s attacks on the nation’s institutions during his term have sparked considerable worry among both foreign and domestic observers. Interest in the election results and their afttermath is therefore understandably high.

SIS professor Matthew Taylor will speak with Ambassador Liliana Ayalde, SIS/BA ’78, the former US ambassador to Brazil (2013-2016). They will discuss her work in the Foreign Service, her role as ambassador during the presidency of Dilma Rousseff, and her perspective on Brazil's current moment, as well as her time as a student at SIS and the impact her education has had on her career.
