A note from Tenleytown Main Street’s Executive Director

As we emerge from one of the most challenging winter storms in recent memory, I want to thank you all for your patience, resilience, and consistent support of your neighbors. From sharing information about trash pickups and snow shoveling services, to working together to clear sidewalks, it has been a community effort to dig out and return to normal routines.

As we look ahead, Valentine’s Day is this weekend and many local businesses are celebrating with activities for you and your family. This newsletter highlights several of these exciting offerings!

Valentine’s Events in Tenleytown

Feb. 13th – District Irish Dance is offering Valentine’s Night Out from 7-9 pm on February 13th featuring a dance party for kids 5 and up, designed to give parents a relaxing date night. The event requires no prior experience and includes a movie, games and a disco-dance party. Registration can be found online for $45 per dancer.

Feb. 14th – Sahara Dance is offering their “Valentine’s Day Veil Romance” on February 14 from 1:30-3:30 pm. This workshop doesn’t require veil dancing experience. Registration is also open for their 8-week Beginner, Cardio and Brush-Up classes. The 8-week blocks run from February 28 to April 24 and are designed to support consistent progress no matter the experience level. Learn more about events and classes and register online.

Feb. 15th – On Sunday, February 15th at 3 pm, St. Ann’s Church will welcome singer Anastasia Sidorova and pianist Vera Danchenko-Stern to perform “Panorama of Russian Romance.” Featuring works from Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and many more, it’s the perfect program for Valentine’s weekend. Guapo’s is now offering “Late Night Happy Hours” throughout the week. In addition to their standard happy hours from 3:00-6:00 pm Monday through Friday, late night happy hours now include the times listed below. Enjoy these expanded hours this Valentine’s Day!

Sunday – Thursday: 8-10 pm

Friday – Saturday: 9-11 pm

Tenleytown in History

Ever wondered where Kermit the Frog was born? Tenleytown is recognized as the birthplace of Kermit the Frog because it was home to the WRC-TV studios where the character first debuted. On May 9, 1955, Jim Hensen, then a student at the University of Maryland, launched his five-minute puppet show, Sam and Friends.

The original Kermit looked more like a lizard than a frog but he was famously handcrafted by Hensen using a discarded green felt coat belonging to his mother and two halves of ping-pong balls for eyes.

Today, the original puppet is preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
