Have you ever wondered about the history of Tenleytown? If so, there are some fantastic resources to learn more about this vibrant community at the Tenleytown Historical Society website which is full of fascinating information and pictures. Originally named after the Tennally Tavern at the corner of River Rd and Wisconsin Ave, Tenleytown is the second oldest village in DC after Georgetown. The years before the Civil War saw little development but the construction of Fort Reno and the influx of soldiers began growth that continued for decades as formerly enslaved individuals, whites, and German immigrants moved to the area for the promise of cheap land.
Transportation also played a role in the growth of Tenleytown. 1888 saw the expansion of a horse-drawn trolley line to Tenleytown which was quickly followed by the introduction of electric streetcars in 1890. This transportation connection to the downtown helped fuel growth and enticed retailers like Sears and Roebuck (where the Target is located) which came to Tenleytown in 1940 with modern amenities like rooftop parking and air conditioning.
